Another in a series looking at noteworthy Australian broodmares.

FAIRY DAME (190-f Osterley; foundation mare for family of Fairy Dame, CF A139) : unraced dam of two foals for two winners. Whilst a relevantly obscure family, it does boast amongst its two (!!) only pacers a double millionaire and dual NZ Cup winner (Flashing Red, $2,000,502, fastest family pacer, 1:55.2) and a small number of blue blood trotting descendants which form the majority of the progeny relating back to Fairy Dame.

Flashing Red

Fairy Dame’s sire Osterley (T2:24.8) was by Childe Harold from Belle Briggs, a mare imported from North America as Kentucky Maid (eight CF progeny). Osterley was the first 2:25 trotter seen in Australia, a winner of seventeen Melbourne races (fourteen Richmond, one each Sandown/Mentone/Aspendale) setting a series of trotters race mile records with his T2:25.0 at Richmond in September 1893 – Victorian, Australian and Australasian record while his T2:24.8TT on 1 September 1894 at Melbourne Showgrounds (then 660yd track) improved these records further.

Fairy Dame was the dam of just two foals, a full brother and sister, both of which were winners back in 1910/20’s decades :

Bay Voyage (1913g First Voyage), T2:38.5, successful sire, Sailor Voyage, 2:20.5, Woodend Cup and Rutherglen TC Open, also a successful sire of the dam of Sailor Girl (sixth dam of Romantic Flyer, T2:05.7, $44,066), Pyramid, 2:19.0, won five races in Melbourne (two Richmond, three new Ascot) and Drummer Girl, third dam of Rikison, 2:12.0

Olive Voyage (1914f First Voyage), T2:25.0 (27 October 1924, winning by 100 yards in a time sixteen seconds faster than any other horse on the day; subsequently handicapped off 84yds the following week, thereafter never won another race), won six races at Richmond (VIC, Melbourne), trained/driven by Percy Dove racing in the Tradesman’s Trots. Dam of one foal when bred to Grand Voyage’s son Grand Derby, the unraced Olive Branch (3×2 cross to First Voyage, first stallion to sire one hundred trotting winners in Australia), was the dam of six foals, one winner

Flashing Red A Butt
  • Courvy Kazi, unraced dam of five foals, one winner with Flashing Red the only named foal form the mare. She was by Golden Medoro a New Zealand bred stallion who left 114 foals, 28 of who won about $12,000. Flashing Red’s grandfather was another Kiwi Master Scott, who left only 25 foals, two of whom started (both won).

His sire Echelon was an old style hard-hitting 1:50.6 American racehorse by Troublemaker from a Race Time mare. Echelon left 107 winners with a good strike rate, winning over $5m in Australasia of which Flashing Red won nearly half of.

 

FLASHING RED, tough/rugged stayer, co-owned/trained in Australia by Stuart Hunter (co-owner Norm Jenkin : ownership through respective companies Ravelyn Pty Ltd and Jenkscraft Pty Ltd) and trained in New Zealand by Tim Butt.

Flashing Red 2006 NZ Cup

The  winner of thirty eight races (six NZ/three Addington, one Alexandra Park; thirty two AUS/eighteen TAS; eight QLD/seven Albion Park; one Gloucester Park; two NSW/one Harold Park; one Globe Derby; two VIC/one Moonee Valley), 1:55.3AUS, $2,000,502, eight Group Races – Gp 1 : NZ Cup (twice), Auckland Cup; Gp2 : QLD Winter Cup, Ashburton Flying Stakes; Gp 3 : Ballarat Cup, two ID heats; other feature wins included Methven Cup, Cordina Sprint, Popular Alm FFA. Placed second in NZ/City of Auckland FFA’s, New Brighton Cup, QLD Pacing Championship, SA/Hunter/Victoria/Ballarat/WA Cups; thirds in Hannon Memorial, Victoria/Fremantle/Hunter Cups, QLD Pacing Championship; fourth ID Pacers Final.

NZ Cup finish 2007

Establishing two NZ Records – 3200m stand 3:57.8; 2700mM 3:17.2; Australasian Grand Circuit champion; NZ Pacer/Harness Horse of Year; Hall of Fame inductee QLD/TAS; has had an open class pace “Flashing Red” named after him in Queensland since 2010. Sire of five winners in NZ/eight in AUS plus a solitary broodmare sire credit in each country.

Ashburton Flying Stakes

Flashing Red became just the sixth Australian bred pacer to win a New Zealand Cup (2006 and again in 2007), first since Steel Jaw in 1983  none since (Arden Rooney NZ bred). He is the only named progeny and winner of his dam; one of five Gp one winners for his sire Echelon by Troublemaker – the others being Joesashyguy/TAS Derby; Please Don’t Tease/Sokys Dream, both SA Oaks and Satans Destiny, VICSS – 2c
