DAHLIA (1904 The Draper/blood mare (A55); foundation mare of family) : 2:55.7; one foal.  a winner. This Australian family’s most prominent branch has in recent decades acquired a distinctly Kiwi (New Zealand) lineage. Dahlia’s A55 family includes Pay Me Christian ($339,778), one of only a few to exceed $100,000 in stake earnings. His then 1:52.8 NSW/Australasian record mile time in the 2006 Newcastle Mile remains the family’s fastest to date.

Dahlia’s sire The Draper (T3:11.1; successful sire) was by Childe Harold’s son Osterley (early champion Australian racehorse/sire) from White Rose, a daughter of Len Rose (T2:35¾), imported to Australia from North America in 1882, later winning six races at Elsternwick (Melbourne).

The most prominent of all of the branches of the Dahlia family commences with Welcome Cobber, a granddaughter of Lady Bronte. Owned by the Stillards family, she was a metropolitan winner at the Melbourne Showgrounds in 1952.

Chelsea Meadow, a non-winner at two, won on two occasions as a three year old (initial win at Stawell) and placed third in VIC Sires Produce. Four victories at four included one at the Melbourne Showgrounds. At five, she furnished a fine record of seven victories including AG Laidlaw Cup (Stawell), at Melbourne Showgrounds heat/final of Spring Hcp and Children’s Hospital Hcp/Cup, her final win, retiring to stud after a solitary six year old start.

On Credit’s (1973f Royal Dollar/Chelsea Meadow) nineteen victories and ten placings came from forty one career starts including eleven wins at Moonee Valley and one at Globe Derby. As a two year old she won one of her three starts (Stawell) and placed third in a Victoria Youthful heat. At three, On Credit won six races (one in Melbourne) including a heat of the SA Oaks (third in final), placed second in a NSW Oaks heat (fourth in final).

A winner of nine of fifteen four year old starts, On Credit’s victories included seven at Moonee Valley – Kaiser Stuhi Cup (later Ladyship Cup), VIC 4yo Championship against males, Victoria Mares Championship and Her Ladyship 4yo Mares Classic at Kilmore. Becoming the youngest mare to ever contest the Interdominion Championship heats held at Moonee Valley (unsuccessful) and finishing second to Roma Hanover in her Australian mares race mile record time of 1:57.8 set in the 1978 Ladyship Mile at Harold Park.

A short but spectacular five year old career involved just six starts – winner of heat/final of Kaiser Stuhi Cup off 25m, an open class discretionary off 15m at Moonee Valley before time trialling in a sizzling 1:57.7 at Lords Raceway, Bendigo (fastest by a mare in Victoria and second only to Roma Hanover’s 1:57.2 at Redcliffe, QLD).

On Credit’s first four foals were bred in Australia, the fifth Tabella Classique was conceived in Victoria but foaled in New Zealand after the mare was purchased by National Bloodstock supremo David Phillips. This is where NZ’s original influence on the family of Dahlia has its beginnings. Among On Credit’s progeny were :
