FIVE years ago promising freshman Major Crocker made his Globe Derby debut.

Owned in South Australia, the Victorian-trained gelding produced an eye-catching performance to finish second in the state’s Derby for trainer Vince Vallelonga.

On Saturday night, Major Crocker’s half-brother Adam Crocker will also make his maiden Globe Derby appearance, with connections hoping the two-year-old can go one better than his ‘big bro’.

Adam Crocker is engaged in a heat of The Allwood for local trainer Justin Brewin who is confident the son of Somebeachsomewhere can overcome a tough second row draw.

Previously prepared by New South Wales horseman Bruce Harpley, Adam Crocker will make his first appearance for Brewin.

“Bruce had him in tremendous condition,” Brewin said. “Bruce raced him through the recent Southern Cross series where he finished third in the Final a couple of weeks ago.

“His work since being here has been terrific and I wouldn’t be looking to swap him for any others in the race.

“The draw hasn’t done him any favours, but I’d expect him to finish in the top three.

“I’d be very surprised and disappointed if he didn’t at least qualify for the Final.”

The “Final” is next week’s $100,000 The Allwood – a Group One touted as Australia’s greatest value two-year-old race given it is limited to stock from last year’s SA yearling sale.

The futurity is brainchild of Harness Racing SA chairman Gary Crocker, who also owns Adam Crocker.

Crocker also owned Major Crocker before selling him to American interests last January.
