There really isn’t much Chris Alford hasn’t achieved in the sulky, but his hunger is stronger than ever.
That’s never been more evident than this season when as a 50-year-old he has re-written the history books – yet again.
Alford’s win on Dependlebury at Geelong last night was his 389th of the season.
It’s the most any driver in Australasia has snared in a season, passing the previous record set by Daryl Douglas in the 2007-08 season.
And there is still more than five weeks of the season remaining.
“If you’d asked me 15 years ago if I’d still be driving this many winners and setting records, I’d have laughed at you,” Alford said. “But, I guess, it’s all about enjoyment. And I love driving and getting to lots of meetings as much as I ever have.
“I’ve had a lot of help from so great supporters this season, especially Emma (Stewart) and Clayton (Tonkin). But it’s just not the big stables, it’s all the people around the state who have supported me for so many years and continue to do so.”
Asked for specific highlights in his stellar season, Alford only had to think back to the recent Vicbred Grand Finals night.
“Those final wins on Centenario and Poster Boy, two horses I have a close affinity with, were the most special this season. Both of them were under the pump a bit going into their finals, but stood-up and won well,” he said.
“I’m excited they’ve both still got the Breeders Crown to come this season.
“That’s my focus now. Emma and Clayton had such a big Vicbred series winning five of the six pacing finals and most of their best horses go onto the Breeders Crown now.”
