4THE 2016/2017 harness racing season is heating up with Harness Racing ACT and Goulburn Harness Racing Club announcing a new ‘Canberra/Goulburn Regional Horse of the Year’ Award for owners and trainers.  The award is a joint initiative that has been generously sponsored by TAB.COM and will help increase competition and participation by attracting owners and trainers both locally and from further afield.

All horse owners and trainers who race in any of the 30 meets at Canberra or Goulburn will be in the running to win.  Every starter accumulates points to ensure every horse has the chance to win the major prize. The new incentive is expected to attract more horses to the competition, ensuring the fields are racing at maximum capacity and the number of races at each meet remains high.

The winner of the ‘Canberra/Goulburn Regional Horse of the Year’ will receive a $5,000 cash bonus for the owner, and a $2,500 cash bonus for the trainer.  The award has been sponsored by TAB.COM as part of its support for the Summer of Racing Carnival with the winner announced at a combined presentation night in Canberra in July 2017.

According to Wayne Gowland, President of Harness Racing ACT: “We hope that this fantastic incentive will attract horse owners and trainers from not just Goulburn and Canberra, but also from further afield including the Riverina, Central West and South Coast.

“This award is one of a number of new initiatives aimed at raising the profile of harness racing amongst participants and spectators in the wider Canberra and Goulburn region.  We’re looking forward to continuing this exciting 2016/2017 racing season with the commencement of the Summer Carnival at Goulburn on Sunday, January 15.  The Carnival runs across four consecutive Sundays through January and February 2017,” continued Gowland.
