Goulburn horseman Matt Day reaped the rewards for hard work at the recent Sydney APG Sale, Day prepared 21 yearlings for the sale 5 of his own and 16 for outside clients.
Day with the help of his fiancée’ Janine Thomson, run a breeding and broodmare venture at Goulburn situated in the Southern Tablelands 195 Kilometres south west of Sydney.
The pair works tirelessly all year round breeding up to 10 of their own mares, weaning and preparing yearlings for the sales ring.
Day & Thomson sold the top lot a colt by Somebeachsomewhere from a Bettors Delight mare Bettorthanyou who at two won a semi-final of the Bathurst Gold Crown.
Bettorthanyou is a half-sister to super mare Make Mine Cullen the Breeders Crown Champion at 3 and 4 years of age and added a further two Group 1 races to her trophy cabinet, The Ladyship Stakes at 4 then came back as a 5 year old to claim the Group 1 Queen of the Pacific.
This colt’s grand dam Intrude (by Fake left) is already the dam of 5 winners.
Jean Feiss was the purchaser the colt was knocked down to her for $120,000.
“It was a great result for me and Janine’ Day said.
“We run two properties here in Goulburn one 35 acres and the other 100 were we have the broodmares its hard work but results like this make it worthwhile” he added.
“I couldn’t do it with Janine” Day exclaimed.
Asked how he matches his mares to stallions Day replied “I take into account lots of things size, temperaments, what has worked with the family in the past a whole range of things.”
Day has been preparing yearlings for APG sales since its inception; he is the second youngest son of Frank Day. Matt has 5 brothers and 4 sisters as he said “I was born and bred into harness racing and love it. “
