The inaugural Ladbrokes Protostar is starting to take shape with details of the ballot for the exciting new race revealed.
The Protostar will take centre stage on July 27, 2024 as a part of Blacks A Fake night during the 2024 Queensland Constellations.
Exclusively for two-year-olds, the $500,000 race will be run over 1660 metres at ‘The Creek’ throughout the nation’s premier winter carnival.
The first Protostar will be restricted to 10 starters with eight slots needing to be filled.
Ladbrokes, as the race sponsor, have received two slots.
With 13 applications received, the ballot for the remaining eight positions in the race will be held at Albion Park on Tuesday, January 23 from 4pm.
The ballot will be completed in two parts.
Firstly, the six Queensland-based applicants draw for three slots.
Secondly, the other seven applicants will enter the ballot box – joining the three unsuccessful Queensland applicants – to draw the final five slots.
Successful slot applicants will then turn their attention to selecting a horse for the new two-year-old feature.
The ballot will be live streamed on RaceQ and The Creek’s Facebook pages.
The Queensland applicants for slots are: Gemma Hewitt Racing, Somerset Farms, Daren Garrard Racing, Jamie Durnberger-Smith, GSM Racing and Solid Earth.
The interstate slot applicants are: Wayne Loader , Aaron Dunn Racing, Terry Cluse, Tumby Park Trust, David Miles Racing, Goozdolphin Racing and Team Zav.
