19 July 2023 | Duncan Dornauf for Tasracing

The road to next month’s Beautide continued in Hobart on Sunday night.

The $80,000 Beautide in Hobart on 5 August sees the winner represent the Tasracing slot in the $2.1m TAB Eureka at Menangle in Sydney on 2 September.

Likely contenders include Sunday winners, Magician who proved too good for his rivals in the Group 3 Raider Stakes, and Karalta Artemis, who won a $20,000 3YO race.

Also eligible is Group 3 Granny Smith winner Baby You A Song, however connections have indicated they are considering contesting the upcoming 4YO mares division of the Vicbred.

After a great night of racing in Hobart last week, they will stage this weekend’s sole meeting on Sunday with a 10-race card.

The Stars

Magician – passed $100,000 in stakes earnings with his Raider Stakes win, which takes the gelding’s record to nine wins from 17 starts. It capped off a good weekend for trainer-driver Todd Rattray who trained his 400th winner in Launceston on Friday.

Baby You A Song – hasn’t had much luck at Tasbred Finals time as a two and three-year-old, but at four, she recorded an easy win in the Granny Smith to take her record to seven wins at 12 race track appearances. The win was also trainer Rohan Hillier’s 900th win as a driver.

Mark Yole – the state’s leading driver so far for 2023 extended his lead after five-weekend winners in his quest for his third state premiership. One of his winners was Check In, who returned to form with a narrow win in Sunday night’s Discretionary.

Jacob Duggan – leads the state’s junior drivers’ premiership, and he also had a good weekend with a double on Friday in Launceston and a win in Hobart on Sunday aboard one of his favourite horses Wattabout Spangher. That win was his 50th in his career, and see his five-point concession claim, now reduced to three points in Tasmania.
