Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) and Community College Gippsland have combined to develop the Harness Racing Internship Program.
The Program was established after HRV identified a need to provide a pathway for students to progress from completing Certificate II and III into the harness racing industry in Victoria’s east and the Gippsland region.
In the past many graduates from the Gippsland Harness Training Centre have had to change codes in order to gain work in the equine industry.
The new Program will provide an exceptional young student the opportunity to begin a career in harness racing through a range of benefits, including:
- A 12-month paid traineeship in Harness Racing Driving/Training.
- Enrolment and training in a Certificate IV in Racing (Racehorse Trainer) with Community College Gippsland.
- Individual mentorship and support program.
- Professional development program to build industry knowledge.
- Support to build the required skills and experience to apply for B Grade Trainer/Driver or C Grade Driver licence status.
HRV CEO John Anderson said it was important young harness racing participants were afforded opportunities.
“Victoria’s east and the Gippsland region has experienced rapid residential growth and HRV is excited to announce the Harness Racing Internship Program,” he said.
“The Program will give one of our bright young participants a wonderful opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience, training and a strong start in the industry.”
Community College Gippsland CEO Sue Geals said the college was excited about the program.
“We are really proud to be partnering with HRV. The strength of this program is that it is industry driven and supported to foster and grow aspiring talent in the harness industry,” she said.
“It represents an exciting opportunity for a person who demonstrates real commitment and passion to build a career in the harness racing industry.”
