There is a fresh set of colours to keep an eye out for in the New Year.
During January specially designed silks for the Harness Racing Standardbred Rehoming Company will be worn by drivers on horses carrying the number two saddlecloth in even numbered races at Tabcorp Park Menangle, Newcastle, Bathurst and Riverina Paceway.
This is part of building awareness for the HRSRC that has rehomed 140 NSW standardbreds since its restructure of management in April this year.
The HRSRC has ended the year on a high after being recognised for its commitment with the unique Spur Equine Program.
Designed by veterans for veterans, the Spur Equine Program assists in the wellbeing and recovery of those participants by partaking in courses from horse handling to horse riding.
The Spur Equine Program, located in Picton, currently has five retired standardbreds and for more than 12 months has worked closely with the HRSRC to find suitable horses to be part of the program.
The HRSRC was awarded for this ongoing support according to Spur Program Manager Max Streeter.
“At the end of each year we have an Awards Day to award participants for their milestones,” said Streeter.
“There are several categories and the HRSRC was recognised for its continued support.
“We have been working with the HRSRC for more than 12 months and prior to that, to be honest, I was concerned about sport horses for our initiative as its believed that they can be hot-headed and hard to handle.
“Our vet Wade (from Wollondilly Equine) convinced me that standardbreds had a lot of great assets, so I took one on and wouldn’t turn back now, they have such lovely temperaments and we now have five of them.
“We know that we can contact HRSRC Manager Maria Furina for any help we need and the advantage of liaising with a person like Maria is that we buy into the expertise of the industry as it’s very hard to assess a horse’s temperament in a one-off meeting and that is the sort of information we rely on.”
