CHAMPION Queensland driver Grant Dixon went to the other end of Australian to be crowned national champion in Launceston yesterday (Sunday).

Dixon, 43, upstaged a star-studded line-up in a six race series to be crowned Australian Drivers’ Championship winner.

Consistency across the six heats gave Dixon 71 points to beat South Australia’s Danielle Hill (58) with Queensland’s Shane Graham and NSW’s Robbie Morris equal third on 47 points.

“I was just thrilled to get the call-up to come and drive in the series, let alone win it,” a modest Dixon said.

“It’s great to be part of it and catch-up with so many of the other drivers.”

Dixon has been the star – both training and driving – of Queensland in recent times. He’s won 11 state driving titles.

His win yesterday was another triumph for Queensland and young gun Pete McMullen won last year’s title in Adelaide.

Others to contest the series were: Gary Hall Jr (WA), Gavin Lang (Vic), Greg Sugars (Vic), Lauren Panella (NSW), Chris Lewis (WA), Ryan Hryhorec (SA), Gareth Rattray (Tas) and Ricky Duggan (Tas).
