Sneak A Peek was rewarded for her consistency at Phar Lap Raceway on Sunday when taking out the Brosnan Transport LTD Passing Lane Spring Rewards Mobile Pace (2050m).
The six-year-old mare had finished runner-up in three of her previous four starts and trainer Brad Mowbray was delighted to see her first past the post on Sunday.
“She has been racing well over the last month or so, so it was good for her to get over the line first,” Mowbray said.
“She has been doing a super job. Today was arguably a slight drop in grade, which was all she needed.”
From their second line draw driver Matthew Williamson was able to find an early one-one position with the daughter of Betterthancheddar before they found themselves three back in the running line with a lap to go.
At the 600m mark Sneak A Peek was urged forward by Williamson to go around a tiring Pink Flamingo Run to recapture the one-one before she was presented three-wide in the home straight where she showed her tenacity to fight out a half a length victory over Songbird.
Mowbray was confident of a bold showing from his mare and was proud of her brave performance.
“We needed a bit of luck from the draw, 13, but I was confident as the horse had been working well and seemed bright. I knew if we got the right run we would be near enough,” he said.
“It was a good drive by Matty to keep the horse on the job and she was brave.”
Mowbray is looking forward to what the rest of the year holds for Sneak A Peek.
“She looks after herself quite well and I don’t see why she can’t continue racing until Christmas,” he said.
An added bonus was the $20,700 purse as a result of the Spring Rewards initiative, something Mowbray has taken advantage of.
“I think Mighty Reactor won one as well, so we have had a good run in those races. It is something we aim for now,” he said.
Mowbray was also pleased to see stablemate Spicy Girl Becqui run third in the Catering South Canterbury (Amateur Drivers) Mobile Pace (2050m).
“She hasn’t been too far away in her previous races. She has been racing quite well without a bit of luck,” Mowbray said.
“It didn’t surprise me that she snuck home for third. I was happy with her run.”
