In a wonderful gesture, Kapunda Harness Racing Club is injecting up to $13,000 of its own funds into prizemoney for the Kapunda Cups program on Sunday April 24, the final leg of the SA Cup Series before Finals night on Saturday April 30. This boost means minimum prizemoney on the day will be $6,000, with both the Pacers and Trotters Cups worth $9,999.

Club president Stephen Norman is excited about what the club has planned for the Cups Day – not just regarding the stake boost “The prizemoney increase was supported wholeheartedly by our committee and comes about because of the income streams outside of harness racing that our club generates – particularly through the Kapunda Rodeo. It’s all tied in with what we’re aiming to do with our cup day, and that is to turn it into a carnival event like the thoroughbreds’ Balaklava Cup. We have a theme, which is “Frock Up And Rock Up”, which is aimed at getting a younger crowd in and expose them to how exciting harness racing is. It may take three years, but we want to build the Kapunda Cup into the best day of country harness racing in SA or even Australia!”

HRSA Acting CEO shares Norman’s enthusiasm “This is a wonderful initiative from Kapunda and further cements the merit in our country clubs being able to create non race day revenue streams. Not only have Kapunda made contributions throughout the series, but so have several other clubs whether it be to additional prize money for the Cup, for their support races, or with travel subsidies. For instance, Victor Harbor will also be adding up to $3,500 in prizemoney this Easter Sunday to their meeting, which brings the overall offering for the SA Cup series to almost $275,000. I wish Kapunda, and Victor Harbor all the very best for their Cups meetings, both to be run on long weekend Sundays. I hope we can attract a nice crowd to each venue.”
