MENANGLE Park-based horseman Jack Trainor is preparing for a trip “back home” to New Zealand, where he will campaign with Ladyship Mile winner Stylish Memphis.
The talented mare is one of two New South Wales representatives that will contest the rich $900,000 slot race – known as “The Race” at Cambridge Paceway IN New Zealand’s North Island on April 14.
Stylish Memphis will have her last hit-out on Saturday night at Tabcorp Menangle in the Garrards Joe and Michael Ilsley Free-For-All and Trainor is confident he has the mare spot-on.
“I am pretty excited to be heading back home (to New Zealand) for this race,” said Trainor.
“Taking one of the best mares in New South Wales as our representative is something special.
“She is absolutely thriving at home and her final hit-out on Saturday night should top her off nicely before she flies out next week.”
Stylish Memphis earned her spot in the race after being picked up by Barrett Homes, a local New Zealand building company which secured the classy mare after her win in the Queen Elizabeth II Ladyship Mile on February 26.
“The conditions of the race guarantee that she will draw in either barrier one or two and she has proven throughout her career that she can mix it with the boys,” said Trainor
Alta Orlando is the second of the New South Wales representatives and although getting on in years, will be suited by the style of racing the New Zealand feature offers.
Star junior reinsman, Jack Callaghan will accompany the Belinda McCarthy-trained Alta Orlando across the ditch and will the drive him in the race.
Penrith is racing tonight with the meeting bolstered by the appearance of some up-and-coming stars of harness racing in the Sydney basin.
And there are none more exciting than the well-performed Sweet Lou filly Steno, who is trained by Cameron Ross.
Steno demolished her rivals in the Young Oaks last start, treating them with contempt, scoring by more than 20m in 1.57.8.
Steno contests the Sky Racing Active Pace (Race 3) and will start a short-priced favourite.
“I am using this run to tighten the filly up for the upcoming Golden Easter Egg on Friday week,” trainer Cameron Ross explained.
“After that, all going well, we will aim her for the Australian Pacing Gold Series.”
