The entries consist of 62 colts and 60 fillies.
As part of our office rivalry regarding yearling selections, Michael and I pick a filly and colt/gelding we feel is the best on offer.
Our choices aren’t a guide to prospective sales’ toppers, but rather a “that one looks good” process.
That said, it just so happened the filly I selected – Lot 51 – was the sales’ topper during the Gold Coast Sale last month…fetching $100,000!
Modesty prevents me from pointing out Michael’s two lots combined sold for less than ‘my’ filly.
Melbourne was a different story, with Michael’s colt – Lot 171 – selling for $23,000 to Glenn Maher, while my colt – Lot 218 – was knocked down to Ian Hunter for $21,000.
Proving once again I have a good eye for fillies, my Lot 224 was purchased by premier Tasmanian horseman Ben Yole for $22,000.
Michael’s selection – Lot 143 – fetched $5000.
Distressed by the ledger sitting at a three-to-one ratio in my favour, my well-seasoned colleague believes he has sighted the perfect pair to equal the equation.
For ‘his’ Perth colt, Michael has circled Lot 303 – a son of Vincent and Anna Faye.
“This fellow caught my eye and I know my fellow scribe will have an opinion of what one white sock means, but I don’t take any notice of that,” Michael said. “I would just prefer to be bidding for one by the classy Vincent, a super horse whose career was curtailed by injury.
“In the long run this bloke could end up being a bargain but as he is early in the Perth sale…and doesn’t he look the part!”
Michael has made a nice choice, with the young fella destined to attract healthy bidding, but I think it’s fair to say Lot 312 has him covered.
Also possessing one white leg, the colt is bred in the purple being by Sweet Lou from multiple Group One winner, Bettor Cover Lover.
For selection two – the fillies – Michael rates Lot 345 as the standout, which is a daughter of Captaintreacherous and Lady Luca.
“Once I caught sight of the progeny of this stallion and took a look at him, I was hooked,” Michael said. “The likes of Treachery, Captain Crusader, Captains Queen etc was impressive enough.
“Her dam Lady Luca also performed well in the west and as this is her first foal, who knows how good she’ll turn out to be…but I’m betting she’s a winner!”
Once again Michael has made a shrewd observation, but I’ve got faith in Lot 365.
Another by Sweet Lou, the stunning filly comes complete with a pair of white socks and blaze.
Her dam, Living Hei, has five winners from five starters.
