Sassafras professional horsewoman Shelley Barnes has nominated two superbly bred colts – both from the same family – for the 2022 Tasmanian Harness Yearling Sale on Saturday, March 5 at Carrick Park.
The colts belong to an old time Tasmanian family which has produced horses the calibre of Strezlecki Lady, Claremont Boy, Strezlecki Warrior and Lucky Atashy.
The first of the Barnes’ draft, Lot 1, looks certain to be one of the most sought after lots at the sale.
A lovely, athletic colt, he boasts a speed inheritance matched by few, being by the world champion colt pacer and now leading juvenile sire Always B Miki (1:46) out of the top Tasmanian mare Angel Or Demon (1:56.6).
Angel Or Demon won 10 of her 18 starts including the Coastal Pacing Thousand, Matron Stakes and Mother of Pearl and was the standout female of her era in Tasmania.
This is her second foal, the first being a Pet Rock two-year-old filly currently being broken in by Barnes.
Her other nomination, Lot 10, a neat, compact colt by the very successful Sportswriter, is out of the Village Jasper mare Ima Merry Jasper, the dam of Angel Or Demon.
Ima Merry Jasper ranks as a half-sister to the Shepparton Gold Cup and Tasmanian Pacing Mile winner Strezlecki Lady ($113,155), the NTLHA Cup and St Mary’s Cup victor Strezlecki Time and to the dam of Tasmanian St Leger winner Strezlecki Warrior.
Barnes, who brought out the likes of Highland Pride, Tingara and Angel Or Demon, said both colts are on the market.
“I’m breeding to sell,” Barnes said.
