IT TOOK her rising star seconds to earn an invite and less than two seconds for trainer 107 Jess Tubbs to accept it. Causing a minor upset in tonight’s Chariots Of Fire at Club Menangle, Better Eclipse secured a ‘golden ticket’ into the $1 million Garrards Miracle Mile.
Australasia’s premier sprint, the Grand Circuit event is scheduled to be run at the popular venue on March 5.
Thanks to his success in the Cordina Chicken Farms-sponsored feature, Better Eclipse joins Mach Dan as the only pacers guaranteed a Miracle Mile berth.
Mach Dan sealed his position in the prestigious field with a stylish win in last night’s Newcastle Mile.
Club Menangle will host two qualifiers – Schweppes and Allied Express Sprints – next weekend to decide the balance of the Miracle Mile field.
“Accepting an invitation into the Miracle Mile was a no-brainer,” Tubbs said. “There is only one $1 million race in Australia and you don’t get a chance to be involved in it very often.
“It’s going to be a huge step up in grade for him, but also a huge thrill to be a part of such a prestigious race.
“He showed tonight how quickly he can finish when coming off the speed and there is sure to be plenty of speed in the Miracle Mile.”
With Tubbs’ husband, Greg Sugars, in the cart, Better Eclipse was settled two-back along the pegs from the pole as Bettor Call Me was surged to the lead in a blistering 24.3-second opening quarter.
Brilliantly angled away from the inside to be four-wide at the top of the home straight, Better Eclipse sprinted to a metre-and-a[1]half win from Bondi Lockdown, which produced a phenomenal performance after racing in the ‘death seat’.
Rank outsider Chevron Art was four metres away third.
Covering the 1609-metre trip in a race record 1:47.6, the son of Betterthancheddar became the all-time fastest Australian-bred pacer.
