Bruce Edward entered the world of Standardbred Breeding in 2006 after purchasing a 400 acre property of undulating pasture at Durham Lead , some 20 or so minutes to the south east of Ballarat.

He has steadily built up a strong band of Broodmares numbering into the thirties these days.  Many of those mares were sourced from North America and now the results of Bruce’s research and buying are producing outstanding performances on the racetracks of Australia.

Those results from Durham Park bred horses are quite spectacular –  to the end of the 2021 season , 103 individual winners from 129 foals of racing age and an incredible average earnings for those 103 winners of $92,022.

One of the first outstanding winners sold by Durham Park was Ideal For Real .  He was purchased at the 2013 APG Melbourne Autumn Sale and in just a 22 start career prior to a tragic death , he accumulated $324,600.  Wins in the 2015 NSW Derby and 2016 VicBred Final were amongst his 13 victories.

Petacular , both the Australian 2 and 3 year old Filly of the Years was another outstanding champion to smell the Durham Park air.   Her 26 start career resulted in $454,082 in earnings and on Sunday Durham Park will offer her half-brother at the Neds APG Melbourne Sale.

LOT 241 is a stunning looking Colt by champion Sire Bettors Delight and it will be no surprise if he sells for a six figure sum and is a potentiasl Sales topper.

It will be a wise decision for his new owner to leave him as a colt as with his pedigree and first two dams being by Western Ideal and Artsplace he certainly has stallion potential if he can match a similar race record to his two siblings Petacular and Idyllic.

The Durham Park draft this year numbers fifteen  –  being 12 Colts and 3 Fillies .  In recent years they have been expertly raised and prepared under the guiding eyes and hands of Jamie Lee King.

Jamie Lee is a born and bred Tasmanian and ventured into Victoria a few years ago to further her equine experience.   That experience was gained at the Emma Stewart / Clayton Tonkin training complex where amongst an amazing team of horses , Jamie Lee had a special soft touch for Guaranteed and Heavens Trend.

So let’s get a tip straight from Jamie Lee’s mouth.  When asked earlier this week which Filly she liked amongst the three she is prepping for Sunday’s Sale , the answer was LOT 229  – a Sweet Lou girl from the Group One winning mare Hexham Heartbeat .  She is  nice athletic filly and certainly a sweet moving one.  She is bred 3 X 3 to Artiscape and does appear to have inherited quite a bit of his looks.

With twelve Colts in the stable , it was a bit tough to ask for just one selection so these are three boys that have impressed Jamie Lee in one way or another .

LOT 146 – by Art Major from the Rocknroll Hanover mare Rockaround Sue 1.61.6.   Bruce Edward has enjoyed immense success in breeding from mares he sourced from North America so this Colt could be another to add to that growing List.   The Dam won over $625,000 and Art Major continues to sire precocious Colts so yes Jamie Lee there is a lot to like about him.

LOT 182 – by Art Major from the Western Ideal mare Carolsideal1.50.6.  Once again a similar formula to Lot 146 being just the second foal from a $545,000 winning North American mare.  He looks to have that Art Major stamp on him and the kind temperament that has put him high on Jamie Lee’s list.

LOT 241 – by Bettors Delight from Ideal Priority , by Western Ideal.  He was mentioned previously [ above ] and being a half-brother to the brilliant filly Petacular and equally brilliant colt Idyllic 1.52.9 he will be on the shopping lists of some buyers with loaded pockets.

The first crop of Yearlings by the Kiwi superstar Lazarus will be walking through Auction rings around Australia over the next couple of months and Durham Park have three Colts to offer on Sunday.

“ They are strong , muscular and impressive types “ said Jamie Lee .  “ they are all dual Eligible for both VicBred and NSW Breeders Challenge  , so that should be a strong selling point for them as well. “

We have a Yearling for Everyone is the Durham Park slogan and certainly there is much variety in this year’s draft with the 15 yearlings being sired by 8 different stallions.

There is no doubt that the undulating and hilly property where these Colts and Fillies are raised has a positive impact on their later lives on the racetrack.  This together with the carefully selected bloodlines is now a proven formula for the amazing statistics of winners produced from the Durham Park nursery.

Jamie Lee , Bruce and their staff will be ready in B Barn on Sunday to lead you to another star on the horizon.
