Triple Eight’s Group 1 VHRC Caduceus Classic success at Bendigo in September got the better of Greg Sugars’ emotions, and the master reinsman is tipping some more tears if the horse is able to claim tomorrow night’s Inter Dominion Pacing Championship Grand Final.

Sugars has been caretaker trainer in New South Wales during the six-year-old gelding’s ID21 campaign, but will be joined trackside at Tabcorp Park Menangle this Saturday by wife Jess Tubbs, who prepares the horse back at the couple’s Myrniong base.

“If I was to cross the line first, you might see a tear or two,” Sugars conceded during an interview with old friend Jason Bonnington on Friday.

“I reckon it will be a pretty emotional victory. Jess will be up here by my side too, which will make it even more special if that was to occur.”

Triple Eight, who has run fourth, second and third in his three heats, is the leading Victorian-trained chance in the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship Grand Final according to TAB markets.
