Hunter Valley trainer Clayton Harmey will head to his local track at Newcastle today with another Group 2 winner added to his list of credits.
Harmey won the Breeders Challenge True Blue Series at Menangle on Saturday night with his two-year-old colt Saint Crusader.
Driven by fellow Hunter Valley horseman Mark Callaghan, the pair withstood a protest from the second-placed Im Vexatious to win the $50,000 feature for 100 per cent New South Wales bred horses.
“He will have a spell,” said Harmey after Saint Crusader registered his fifth win in nine starts.
“Hopefully he can grow and mature a bit during his time off and come back better next season for races such as the Bathurst Carnival.”
That was Harmey’s fourth Group success in the last four years.
It was also Callaghan’s fourth Group success as a driver. Harmey has three starters today at Newcastle.
The iForm team have put together the best bets for today:
Newcastle best bet
Race 3: Nuart (1)
Had the money spent before going off stride first up for another trainer but trialling ok at Newcastle since will take some catching.
Newcastle next best
Race 5: Cupcakesnwhipcream (7)
Showed enough at Penrith to keep favourite players very honest.
