14 July 2021 | Duncan Dornauf for Tasracing

It was another great night of racing in Hobart last Sunday, which saw driver Conor Crook and trainer Ben Yole dominate the meeting.

As always, it was an excellent week for the Tasmanians interstate, with a local born driver notching up a season milestone win.

On Saturday, racing minister Jane Howlett announced a $3 million investment in infrastructure upgrades around the state.

From a harness perspective, it includes a track drainage upgrade for the harness tracks at the Brighton Training Centre.

This week we have two meetings with Launceston racing on Friday evening before the tier one meeting of the week in Hobart on Sunday evening.

The Stars

Conor Crook – had a night out in Hobart on Sunday with a driving quartet of winners, including the fast race of the night with Be Major Threat who was too tough late to score over the 2579-metre trip. Crook also drove Magic Feeling to his debut win, Coveffe Hustler and Kuyomi, who he also trains to victory. Crook is now closing the gap on the state drivers title, 11 wins behind Troy McDonald who sits at the top of the table with 54 wins.

Mark Yole – once again proved himself as one of the best front running drivers in the state with a double on Sunday’s program. First, he guided $1.14 favourite Something Bettor to an all the way win before scoring with Major Seascape, who found the top easily from outside of the front row to score.

Fury Dan– good gate speed wins races and we saw that with this Art Major colt who speared straight to the lead in a 40 to 55 rating race that was restricted to three-year-olds. Sent out as a $26 chance, driver Bronte Miller was able to get some soft sections early before proving too good for her rivals. The win was one of four on the night for trainer Ben Yole.

Kate Hargreaves – The Victorian trainer continued her good record in Tasmanian two-year-old races with Magic Feeling who lead for the final 1150 metres to score on debut in Sunday night’s two-year-old event.

Jack Laugher – a former Tasmanian now based in Victoria, has been doing great things interstate for a long time, and that continued at Mildura on Friday afternoon when he drove his 100th season winner. At the time of writing, Laugher is in third spot on the Victorian Drivers Premiership.

Trial File

Carrick Park – Saturday morning
Four trials were held on a cold frosty morning at Carrick Park, so cold that there was no running water for the early part of the session.

The quickest winner of the morning came in the way of the Melissa Maine-trained Karalta Invader.

The gelded son of Sweet Lou was having his first public hit-out since late October and was restrained off the mobile on Saturday morning to settle five-back the marker pegs before gaining a one-out one-back trail over the final 700 metres.

Driver Gareth Rattray peeled three-wide around the home turn and went on to score by seven metres over Mozasu in 2m 3.5s for the mile trip.

Other winners included; Mayleejae Eagle (2m 4.2s), Jimi Sanz (2m 5.5s), and Believe In Forever (2m 9.5s).
