HAVING made amends for last year’s close miss, The Penny Drops is heading for a spell.
Runner-up in the 2020 South Australia Trotters’ Cup, The Penny Drops dominated Saturday night’s edition at Globe Derby.
Thrilled with the gelding’s performance, trainer Ray Harvey plans to give The Penny Drops “a good long break”.
“He has been up for a long time so is ready for spell,” Harvey said. “He has been racing steadily since May last year, and although he is still in terrific shape, I’ll put him out now.
“I’m not sure how long he will have off, but I’ll give him a good long break.”
Driven by local reinsman Mark Billinger, The Penny Drops was settled in the perfect one-one position from his second row draw as Justamollyarcher led from the front line.
Angled three-wide around the final bend the squaregaiter dashed to a 20-metre win from Stress Factor.
Justamollyarcher was a metre-and-a-half away third in 2:03.4 for the 2645-metre stand.
“I couldn’t be happier with that run,” Harvey said. “We went close in last year’s Cup when he was only beaten a half-neck.
“Brent Lilley trained the winner last year and this time he’s finished second, so between the two of us, we’ve run the quinella two years in a row.”
