ASTUTE horseman Greg Scholefield has celebrated his birthday in style.
Making the long trek to Globe Derby Saturday night, Scholefield received the ideal present when his star pacer Emain Macha completed an effortless victory.
“I’m 72 today and can’t think of a better way to celebrate than seeing this bloke win again,” Scholefield said.
“It’s taken a while to get him back to his best this time in and he’s certainly feeling terrific.
“He’s moving better than I am, but I’ve got a few years on him.
“It’ll be early hours in the morning before we get home, but I’ve had a top birthday.”
Driven by fellow veteran Darren Billinger, Emain Macha worked to the lead from barrier six as the remainder of the 2230-metre trip became a procession.
Striding clear of the pack along the back straight, the son of Safari was never seriously challenged on his way to a 15-and-a-half metre win from Regal Lager.
The Ides Of March was eight metres away third after trailing the pacemaker.
Rating 1:58, Emain Macha completed a hat-trick to stretch his record to 35 wins and 16 placings from 63 starts.
Yet to decide on an immediate target for Emain Macha, Scholefield is contemplating another interstate trip with the seven-year-old.
“I haven’t got anything in mind for him, but I may go to Victoria for one of the Cups,” Scholefield said. “While he is in top shape it is a good chance to have a crack at something like the Ballarat Cup.
“In April I’ll be aiming him at the South Australia Cup.”
