Harness Racing New Zealand has confirmed that tomorrow’s meeting at Cambridge will go ahead.

But it will be confined to horses that are already based in the Waikato or outside horses that had already been moved officially by the close of nominations.

HRNZ had been mulling its options in the wake of Auckland being placed in Alert Level 3.  Initially the meeting was scheduled for last night (Thursday) only to be transferred to Saturday in the hope that Auckland and other horses from outside Waikato would be free to travel to Cambridge. That is not possible under Alert Level 3.

But with an update on Alert Levels not expected before 5.30pm (Friday) it’s been decided that the Cambridge meeting will go ahead tomorrow, but only for horses that are based in the area.

“We had to make the call to be fair to everyone,” says HRNZ handicapper Andrew Morris, “we couldn’t wait ’til this evening. This is the tidiest option.”

Updated fields can be found on the HRNZ website. The first race is set down for 11.29am and it’s hoped fixed odds will be available later today.

The weekend’s South Island meetings at Addington tonight and Oamaru on Sunday will be run under Alert Level Two protocols, meaning owners and essential staff will be allowed on-course, but the general public will not.
