Cyclone Vance was a six win trotter who also placed on five occasions in twenty five trotting starts whilst also being unplaced from two starts as a pacer during a career spread over three seasons (three to five years old). Trained and driven throughout her career by astute horseman Todd MacFarlane from his Pukekohe stables. Cyclone Vance broke her maiden race status as a late three year old at her fourth start at Alexandra Park. Placed fifth in her previous three races, she later attained a further five wins at the Auckland headquarters.
Cyclone Vance scored at her second four year old start in late August 2002, also a month later with further victories in early and late December during the Auckland club’s 2002 Christmas meetings. The latest victory came against fellow fillies and mares over 2700m in what was her best recorded mile rate of T2:06.1. Off the scene until late July 2003, she began a new campaign with a run of four placings before taking out her sixth and final success at Alexandra Park in early September 2003. A further string of five placed efforts (thirds to fifths, including fifth in group Two Challenge Stakes against open class trotters) followed. Unplaced efforts in group races the National Trot, Cambridge Trotters Mile and Cambridge Flying Stakes brought her race career to a conclusion (six wins, T2:06.1, $46,582).
The sire of Cyclone Vance was dual gaited sire Safely Kept, well performed pacing classic performer in North America (1:52.4US, $866,999). Safely Kept’s major winning performance was the 1992 North America Cup at Greenwood Raceway, Toronto also a number of two and three year old Group Three features. His record as a sire shows 873 Australian winners, 68 NZ winners (ten trotters) and world-wide 946 winners. As a broodmare sire, Safely Kept has 825 Australian winners with a further 47 NZ winners (twenty trotters). A leading two year old sire on stakes and leading broodmare sire of two and three year olds (stakes and winners) on numerous occasions.
Cyclone Vance’s dam Cyclone Betsi, was the non-winning dam of three winners from five starters including Atlas Alliance, four NZ (three Alexandra Park)/eleven VIC (three Melton)/thirteen NA wins, 1:51.2US, $278,059; Just on Time, two wins, 2:03.7, $11,134 and Cyclone Vance (see above).

Cyclone Vance’s female tail line continues back to Little Agnes through unraced Raffles, (grand dam of boom juveniles Ben, 1:56.7 and Billbob, NZSS – 2c, Cardigan Bay Stakes), Hildas Trust, Gold Trust, Trustworthy (winning trotter), Connie (non-winning trotter) and Agnes B (descendants include NZ/Easter Cup and NZFFA winner Great Adios, Great Reveller, Milly Dee, Local Mark, John Craig, Vertigal and trotters Illawong Helios, Opal Invasion). Cyclone Vance is ten removes from foundation mare Little Agnes.

Racing at the top level over three seasons, Cyclone U Bolt proved very competitive throughout his race career. The winner of his first start in a two year non-tote at Alexandra Park, he didn’t race again until aged three some ten months later. With major successes in the Jewels at three and four, his last start came as a five year old in the 4/5yo Trotters Championship placing sixth to Royal Aspirations.
Cyclone U Bolt raced from the stable of Todd MacFarlane and Craig Sharpe, in the interests of major owner/breeder Aaron Lowe, co trainer Craig Sharpe and several others until sold to Australian owners Merv and Meg Butterworth just prior to Jewels at Cambridge in 2012. The sale had been arranged through bloodstock agent Justin Le Lievre. Cyclone U Bolt (Todd MacFarlane) was fifth favourite at odds of 21/1 when winning the Jewels Ruby – 3T from Stent (Colin De Filippi) and Triumphant Monarch (Tony Herlihy), trotting the mobile mile in 1:59.1, 800m in 58.1 and 400m in 28.8. Following the Jewels, Cyclone U Bolt was transferred to Mark Purdon and Grant Payne’s stables at Rolleston.
Whilst his three year old Jewels success was unexpected, at four in the Jewels Ruby he again went out fifth favourite (10/1) and established an all comers NZ record for the mile of T1:54.5 which smashed Stig’s previous record of T1:55.2 (last 800m 55.6 and 400m in 27.4). He defeated Escapee and Stent in a field that included dual Dominion Hcp winner Master Lavros and Flying Isa (T1:53.2). Cyclone U Bolt became the fifth horse to complete a Jewels double as at the end of 2013. (Our Sky Major is the only horse to date to win the Jewels treble at two, three and four).

Glenferrie Typhoon started his career with Jodi Quinlan and Craig Demmler before changing ownership and becoming a star for Kate and Andy Gath and then had a stint in Western Australia with trainer Matthew Scot (owners G Gullace, C M Cousins, N H Dunbar, M Harrell, A Redden). A further change of ownership to R J (Robert) Stephenson and trainer Roy Roots Jnr in NSW has led to his latest five wins including his best mile time of T1:53.5.
Cyclone Lucky Seven, won three in NZ (one at Alexandra Park) for trainer/driver/part owner Todd MacFarlane (part owner Aaron Lowe), including first start at Cambridge prior to export to Australia. The winner of seven in Australia (two at Albion Park, one Melton/Menangle, T1:56.3) including the Swan Hill Trotters Cup, Woodland Stud All Stars at Melton and placed second in the DJA Memorial at Albion Park
