While four of the top five leading 2yo Sires for 2020 have a combined an average service fee well north of $15,000, one up and coming Sire is ‘breaking the mould’ and breeders in the 20/21 season may be the big winners.
Follow The Stars, the 2014 Australian and New Zealand 2YO of the Year and rated one of the best youngsters ever produced in this country, stood after discounts last year at the amazing value just of $2,400 .
Follow The Stars won 10 of his 11 starts as a two-year-old and $455,409– a scrimmage putting him out of the race at his other appearances in the Harness Jewels at Cambridge.
He won in a career-best 1:53.8 at his second start in the Group 3 NZ Sapling Stakes in February and maintained his brilliance right to the end of a long 2yo campaign, capturing the Group 1 $297,000 Breeders Crown Final at Melton at his final start, ripping home in 55.7 after being required to work overtime from an awkward barrier draw.
The charismatic colt also made a clean sweep of the Australian Pacing Gold series at Melton, winning the Group 1 $322,000 Final in runaway fashion in 1:54.1 for 1720 metres, as well as the $100,000 Cardigan Bay Stakes – his third Group 1 success — at Auckland.
Legendary NZ horseman Mark Purdon, who trained Follow The Stars, said after the Breeders Crown: “There is something special about this horse. He has a real X-factor about him. I would say he is more than up with the best two-year-olds I’ve trained…he is the best.”
When we spoke to an Allwood represented today about the amazing season Follow The Stars is having, he went on to say “ it’s fantastic that the loyal breeders that supported this wonderful siring prospect are getting rewarded where it counts, on the track, the winners circle and the sales ring (His yearlings sold up to $30,000 at the Perth 2020 sale). What’s clear is that is that he has the ability to leave fast fillies and colts, with 11 of his top 20 performers being fillies that just may have a broodmare career after racing “.
Talk has been building that the stud has had interest / enquiries for a potential move of Follow The Stars to the east for the 20/21 season. We put this to the Allwood representative who said “We are currently working through the offers on the table and there is certainly no shortage of proposals for a season or two on the east. We will make a decision on his future soon. We just love having him here so it won’t be an easy call to make”.
