WITH the Southern Cross Series his primary target, astute trainer Scott Ewen is yet to decide whether Bulletproof Boy will have another start before tackling a heat of the futurity.
Southern Cross qualifiers for Bulletproof Boy’s division are scheduled to be run at Globe Derby in a fortnight, with the Final programmed for July 28
Ewen was discussing plans for the three-year-old following his impressive victory at the headquarters last night.
“He is getting back to his best and just in time for the Southern Cross,” Ewen said. “He’s won two of his last three and was only beaten a whisker at Mildura a couple of starts ago.
“I may race him once more before the heats, but I haven’t really sat down and worked it out yet.”
With Ewen in the cart during his latest performance, Bulletproof Boy dashed to the lead from barrier seven before cruising to a soft 16-and-a-half metre win from Takemepitchamister, with Betting Man a head away third.
Rating 1:57.9 over 1800 metres, the son of Art Official stretched his record to 10 wins and eight placings from 27 starts.
“I’ve been upping his work, but he’s not a heavy horse, so I can’t put too much into him at the same time,” Ewen said.
“The extra work load seems to be getting results, so I’ll stick to that and hope he can keep his form going for the next few weeks.”
Following his Southern Cross engagements, Bulletproof Boy will head back across the border in a bid to collect his Vicbred bonus.
“After the series I will try again to pick up his bonus,” Ewen said. “He’s also eligible for the Breeders’ Crown, so I will have a look at the local heat for that as well.”
