The Auckland junior driver ranks are set to be boosted with promising reinswoman Mikayla Lewis heading north next season.
Lewis is set to leave Brent White’s Temuka stable to take up a position with Barry Purdon.
Her new job will have her working alongside her partner, Nathan Purdon.
Purdon and his brother, Michael, previously announced they are leaving their father Mark’s stable to train alongside their uncle, Barry.
Lewis is looking forward to her move north and hoping to make an impact on the Northern junior ranks.
“It should be good; a new learning experience and a new driving experience, hopefully,” Lewis said.
Though she is excited about working for master trainer Barry Purdon, do not expect to see Lewis jumping for joy ahead of her shift.
In fact, she is not going anywhere in a hurry after being kicked by a horse.
The incident has Lewis on crutches and wearing a brace on her leg that Sea Biscuit’s rider Red Pollard would be proud of.
Like Pollard, Lewis is not letting her injury keep her off the track for long.
”I got kicked in the knee by a horse at work,” she said.
”It was a three-year-old trotter – my favourite horse in the stable actually.
“It was just one of those random things, one of those in the wrong place at the wrong time situations.”
Lewis has notched five wins from 58 starts in a promising start to her driving career.
She has notched four of those wins for her current employer, Brent White, including three with trotter, Xmas Joyella.
“Whitey has looked after me really well, it has been ideal working there.”
