SOUTHERN BELLE FINAL AND WINTON CUP ON SATURDAY – Saturday 14 April
Some excellent harness racing action will be on the cards at Central Southland Raceway in Winton this Saturday when the Winton Harness Racing Club host their annual Cup Day meeting supported by Winton Mitre 10.
One of the features of the day will be the final of the Southern Belle Speed Series run over 1609 metres for a stake of $20,000. The series, supported by Empire Stallions, AON Insurance, VetSouth Equine and the Southland Standardbred Breeders Association, is an important one for the southern harness racing industry.
Other features include the Winton Businesses Cup over 2400 metres and the Winton Mitre 10 Nugget Final over the same distance.
On course patrons can also be in to win with two lucky losing ticket draws courtesy of Gypsy Kitchen Nightcaps after Race 6 on the day.
Racing is scheduled to start at 11.40am and admission to the course is free!
Methven Owners Day – Sunday 15 April
The Methven Trotting Club would like to invite all owners, even those without horses running on the day, to attend their meeting on Sunday 15 April, in what will be known as their Owners Meeting.
The club warmly invites industry merchants and also fellow club administrators to attend the event and be a part of their owner’s experience and expo at the meeting.
There will also be a unique chance for owners on the day to add to their winning race stake.
A list of the best Methven trained horses will be available in the racebook and patrons will be asked to list their ten preferred horses in order and drop in a box in the secretary’s office. The three closest entries to the clubs judges selections will be successful.
The club has asked local bloodstock agent Peter Larkin, successful local trainers Terry May, Patrick O’Reilly and harness historian Martin Nordquest the task of selecting the successful combination.
This will be exceedingly difficult given the list includes horses who have won 2 N.Z. cups, 4 Auckland Cups, 7 Easter Cups, 11 Hannon Memorials, 4 N.Z. Derbys and, 3 N.Z. Oaks. The list also includes old public favourites like ‘ugly duckling’ Manaroa, Rainbow Patch the first horse to start in a N.Z. Cup with a female driver (the late Lorraine Watson) and Interdominion Grand final winners Tactician (trained by the late Maurice McTigue) and trotter Fraggle Rock (the late Carl Middleton)
First prize is a service to promising local trotting sire Superfast Stuart, second prize is a $250 voucher from Rural Co and third a $250 prize pack from Hammer Hardware.
And if the winner is an owner on the day and their horse wins, the club will donate an extra $1000 dollars to the winning stake
Already Alexandra Park and Southern Harness have registered their interest to attend the meeting to promote racing at their clubs. The clubs will present options to owners and trainers in terms of racing a horse with them, and answer any questions they may have about racing there.
There has also been strong interest from local trainers with ownership opportunities, willing to present these options to oncourse patrons.
Any trainer who wishes to be interviewed in the birdcage on the day and introduced to potential owners should make contact to book their interview spot on the day.
The club wishes to reward owners with a horse in at their meeting by hosting them in the Mt Hutt Lounge oncourse. They will also invite owners from the region to attend and offer special catering options on the day for them, and encourage non owners to come along and find out how they can become a part of the action.
There will be numerous prize draws operating on the day, and the club would love to see a strong turnout to reward the owners of the industry.
For more information on how you can be a part of this special event please contact Nigel Armstrong on 027 328 2206 or email wstvue@xtra.co.nz

Expressions of interest sought for Forbury Claimers Series
For many seasons now the Claimer Series have been an important part of the Forbury Park Winter racing series, and have seen strong support from trainers and owners.
Following the updates to the rating system it has now meant that a lot of claiming type horses are now racing in a grade where they are competitive.
As a club Forbury Park is keen to continue the series this winter, but do need support from trainers and owners.
In order to be able to programme these races and the series in May, June and July the club are seeking expressions of interest, so they know these races can go ahead.
If you would like to express interest in starting in the series please contact Forbury Park committee member Geoff Knight in the first instance, by calling 027-310-7731 or emailing gandjknight@xtra.co.nz
