She lacks the real class of the best three-year-old fillies in the country, but there’s still plenty to like about impressive Motukarara winner, Samskara.
The Nigel McGrath-trained filly showed a bit of class to beat a handy enough field of experienced pacers later on in proceedings at the grass track meeting – withholding a mid-race attack to casually stroll on by in the hands of Blair Orange.
The daughter of Christian Cullen continued the good run of fillies jumping out of Nevele R Fillies heats into normal races for good results with her victory, the second of her 11-start career.
And while she might not mix it with the best of the best, Orange was of the opinion she’s capable of continuing to do a good job.
“She’s just not quite up the best of them unfortunately,” he said.
“But she showed today she’s capable of coming into these sorts of races and being very competitive.”
Still very much the raw product, Samskara looks to have has the potential and with continued improvement, and time on her side, she could work her way through the grades.
“She’s not the easiest horse to handle, but she does have raw speed.”
Bred, owned and raced by Paul and Pauline Renwick, Samskara looks destined for a career in the broodmare paddock with her bloodlines, but she should be able to further her credentials before then.
“She’s probably going to be a broodmare at some point but on what she did today she could grab another couple of wins for sure,” said Orange.
Samskara was one leg of a winning double for Orange who extended his lead in the driving premiership via that win and also that of maiden trotter In Sequence, who won the opening race of the day for the Ken and Tony Barron stable.
