President of the Westport Trotting Club, Dan Moloney, has provided an insight to a strong Coast breed leading into this Friday’s meeting at Patterson Park. He has kindly shared this article with HRNZ

Victoria Rulz won four races on the track but it is as a broodmare that she is making a name for herself. Her five foals to have raced are Ranfurly Rulz (7wins), Change the Rulz (5 wins), Lis Rulz (4wins) Vinnie Rulz (0 wins) and Benhope Rulz (3 wins.)

Victoria Rulz traces back through Westport racing royalty. She was out of Rule Zona, who was out of May Rule out of Ima Rule out of Golden Rule out of Envy out of Marie Scott out of Whispering Grass.

The Craddocks, Reedys, and Walshs all had success, at different times, with the family over many years and now it is the turn of Richard Dellaca to carry on the breed with some success. The local DoubleYou Teecee syndicate enjoyed two wins with Liz Rulz before she was leased out to the Paynter stable in Cambridge. Since then she has added two more wins to her record and continues to race generously.  Her success on the track will augur well for her in the future as a broodmare.

Benhope Rulz had five race day starts for a second and three wins for the DoubleYou Teecee syndicate and other local owners in Jason Yang and Richard Dellaca. However he is destined to do his future racing in Western Australia after his sale to Perth interests. So his performances on the track did not go unnoticed and an offer was made that was too good to turn down. His win on Boxing Day at Westport was a fantastic effort and especially poignant given the death of one of the syndicate members a few weeks early. He showed a lot of promise and it will be exciting to watch his career unfold. He joins many other expat Bullerites in Perth albeit he of course has four legs and not two although his three quarter brother Jason Rulz is still racing in Western Australia without much recent success.

As for Victoria Rulz well she continues to produce foals and her next horse to race will be a two year old by the American stallion A Rocknroll Dance (Rocknroll Hanover out of Wichita Hanover). A Rocknroll Dance was a very fast horse and was the first horse to pace three races in succession under 1:48. He retired with earnings in excess of $2,000,000.  How he will go at stud is another question with his oldest progeny only two year olds. For local enthusiasts write down the name Rockntommy Rulz in your little Black Book and look for him to be continuing a Westport  breed, stretching back nearly one hundred years, when he steps out on the track in June or July.
