Manawatu Club News – February

The Manawatu Harness Racing Club is delighted to announce that following a review of turnover for the season to date, the club will be maintaining stakes at the current levels. When the increase to $8,000 for Tuesdays and $10,000 for Thursdays was announced last year, it came with the proviso that they would be reviewed mid-season to measure the impact. Given the support of trainers and the quality of the fields with a subsequent positive impact on turnover we feel confident this is an appropriate step.

In addition the Club has increased the stake for our two feature races, the Speights Ale house Manawatu Cup on 15th February to $17,500 and the City of Palmerston North Festival Gold Cup on 29th March to $15,000.

Waikouaiti 22 and 24 February

Horse racing has taken place for nearly 150 years at Waikouaiti Racecourse, with local residents agitating for racecourse land dating back to 1870. With a strong and popular history at the track for both trotting and galloping communities’ alike, conversations around abandoning and transferring meetings is hard to digest, particularly for members of the Waikouaiti Trotting Club.

It is a very real reality, particularly given the threat of small track closures throughout New Zealand, of which has been a hot topic of debate in recent weeks.

The club is currently in full swing with plans for their Summer Carnival, which is set to take place this month, on Thursday 22 February at 3pm, and Saturday 24 February at Midday. Entertainment lined up for 2018 includes a variety of free kids entertainment such as bouncy castles, merry go rounds, and children’s fashion on the field sponsored by Meridian Mall Dunedin. Kidz Kartz will also be in attendance. Entry is free, and people are encouraged to bring along a picnic or enjoy the food offerings on-course and enjoy an afternoon of action-packed racing.

The Waikouaiti Trotting Club is a small, not-for-profit organisation, run by several volunteers. The work that goes in to preparing the two-day trot meeting – the only two race days on the annual calendar for the club – take months of hard work and planning. “These two days give us the opportunity to showcase our lovely district; visiting trainers stay in local accommodation, eat out, and enjoy what the town has to offer” says Waikouaiti Trotting Club President Dick Tayler. “It’s not only about the racing, but about supporting our community, and the community enjoying a wonderful day out in return.”

“We hope that attendance on Saturday 24 February reflects the hard work that has taken place – we’ve got to make the most of our facility while we can, or we’ll lose it forever” says Tayler.
