Lazarus, Stent at workouts
New Zealand Cup champion Lazarus is scheduled to make his first public appearance this season at the Rangiora workouts on Wednesday, when he clashes with All Stars stablemate and fellow NZ Cup hope Heaven Rocks in a two-horse pacing heat over 2000m at 2.15pm.
Top trotter Stent (30 wins) returns to the track for trainer Colin De Filippi after a 21-month break with injuries in the 3.30pm feature trot.
San Carlo aims high
Rising Australian star San Carlo will target the Victoria Cup on October 14 at Melton after reeling off his 18th win from 21 starts at Bendigo on Saturday.
The lightly-raced and injury-plagued seven-year-old Mach Three gelding worked forward to find the lead, steadied through a cosy 61.6sec middle 800m, then ripped home in 55.4s and 26.9sec over 2150m.
San Carlo ran a strong third to flying mare Ameretto in the Group II Breeders Crown Graduate free-for-all at Melton.
Trainer Steve O’Donoghue says he will now head towards the $A200,000 Victoria Cup (2240m), where he will clash with the likes of Kiwi flyer My Field Marshal, and maybe the Perth Inter-Dominion series in late November.
