ANOTHER round of Sires’ Stake Finals – another Australian Pacing Gold champion!
Following Group One victories in New South Wales and Victoria from APG graduates, classy filly Saphirique has joined the feature winners’ list thanks to her triumph in a Southern Cross Final at Globe Derby during the weekend.
Stretching her record to four wins and two seconds from 11 starts, Saphirique completed a clean sweep of the South Australian futurity.
Racing the best of her crop all season, the Nicole Molander-trained youngster has also contested the Australian Pacing Gold, Vicbred Super Series and Youthful Stake.
“She’s had a pretty long season and is ready for a break,” Molander said. “She was pretty tired by the time the Southern Cross came around, but she got there.
“We won’t press on for the Breeders’ Crown as she has earned a spell and will have a good, long break.”
Driven by Gavin Lang during her latest triumph, Saphirique occupied the ‘death seat’ before proving too strong as she scored from Rigaleto Pegasus and Girls In Charge in 2:02.5 over a rain-soaked 1800 metres.
“I’m thrilled with the way she went,” Molander said. “She was at the end of her tether, but still fought on strongly.
“After a good break, if she comes up as well as she was she this season, I can’t see why she won’t measure up to the big races again, such as the Oaks.”
