It seems the Elkins family have found another smart horse, with Jax Navaro running a blistering time to take Race 4 and set a new course record at Marburg on Saturday afternoon.
The five-year-old gelding by American Ideal out of Thorninmyside held off Win Or Die and Hannahs freedom to score over the 1850m in 1min 58.4sec.
The previous record belonged to another Elkins stable star in the recently retired mare Purple Royale.
Matt Elkins said: “We have sorted him out now, and he is a real nice horse.”
Jax Navaro next steps out on Thursday (July 13) in Race 7 at Redcliffe. Matt retains the ride for his father Greg, and the pair will start from gate two.
Another noted winner was the four-year-old stallion Newmerella Sharkie for Max and Brett Towns.
Plagued by injury as a young horse, the lightly raced stallion has stepped out twice at Marburg for a win and a second.
Out of the Perfect Art mare Dream Affect, Newmerella Sharkie is a half-brother to Towns’ handy pacer, Newmerella Fella.
Saturday proved a picture-perfect day for patrons and competitors at Marburg, following Friday’s rain which threatened to hamper the meeting.
“The MPA committee would like to thank track curator Ron Knack, who worked tirelessly on Friday and Saturday morning to ensure that the meeting could proceed,” a Marburg Pacing Association spokesperson said.
The Pick the Card competition has jackpotted again, with $1150 up for grabs at the August 5 meeting
