Maori Law’s almost flawless record was enhanced at Ballarat last night with a win over Breeders Crown champion Cruisin Around.
It was Maori Law’s ninth win from 11 starts, trainer Bill Morgan full of praise for the beautifully bred son of Lawman-Sundonna.
“He’s done a really good job. He’s only doing what he has to do to win at the moment, and last night Gavin (Lang) never pulled the plugs but just had to wake him up a bit late when the other one was running on,” Morgan said.
“That’s a bit of the driver factor, too. Gavin just does what he has to do to win and doesn’t knock them around too much.”
Maori Law rated 2:00.8 over 2200m last night, parking in the breeze and allowing Dora Pepperell to freewheel in front with Cruisin Around in the pocket. Maori Law sprinted at the top of the straight to put two lengths on Zhenya, with Cruisin Around launching a powerful burst in the final 100m to miss by 1.5m.
A half-brother to Maori Time, Happy Maori and Lady Bellanique, Maori Law is bred to keep winning for long-time trots owner and breeder Fred Crews.
Morgan trains Maori Law at Seymour and says he’s “lucky to have him”.
Morgan said the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series was the aim for Maori Law long-term, and added the fact he remained a metropolitan maiden meant there were plenty of race options on the radar.
Meanwhile, the baby squaregaiters debuted at Maryborough in the 157 days to the Seelite Redwood 2YO Trotters Handicap yesterday.
Nicole Molander-trained One Muscle Hill produced a flawless performance to hold of Wobelee by a head in 2:06.1 from the one-mile standing start, Gavin Lang guiding the Muscle Hill-Landoras Pearl colt home.
The run of the third placegetter, Aldebaran Pete, was enormous after missing the start and making up huge ground.
