Two extremely well-bred mares from QLD will have a massive battle for honours in race 2 tomorrow at Menangle (Tuesday 24/01/2017). Although Firebby went 1:51.3 in her first look at the track last week, it was only good enough for a 2nd place.

The Christine Monte trained Firebby, has gate speed as fast as any 4yo mare in the country and if history tells us anything, she will lead for gate 4 and set the tempo for the race. The young mare is from that very good N91 family and, as reported last week, her family is full of very fast horses.

The only horse in this field that l can see stopping this QLD speed machine from claiming her first NSW win, will  be the Ian Wilson trained (and also extremely well bred), Be Nice Huther. This mare is out of Bute Sister an Artiscape mare that is the sister of multi group 1 and group 2 stars from NZ, Badlands Bute and Caps Off.

This N56 family and more importantly the dam Bute Sister still have that special blood that just keeps producing winners. The mares’ first foal, a filly named Bute falcon (Falcon Seelster) won more than $24,000 with a race record of 24-4-4-1, best time under 2:00.0

The next Foal (filly) unfortunately passed away before reaching her racing age, her 3rd foal a Colt, Bute Courage (Courage Under Fire)  quickly won $29,965 and was then sold to Canada where he will finish his race career. The 4th Foal Shillelagh, a colt by Art Official, has shown great speed and has earnings of $23,755 so far in just 21 starts and a best time under 1:58.0

Be Nice Huther (Badlands Hanover) is the next Foal. After setting one of the fastest times ever for a 3yo filly at Newcastle of 1:55.5. she has gone on to win $17,000 from just 12 starts and looks like she has plenty more to come.  Like a lot of New Zealand born horses she missed a lot opportunities early as she wasn’t eligible for any serious races here.

Ian Wilson has a younger brother of Be Nice Huther in work now, by Western Terror (a very strong cross for the dam), who is showing some real signs he could be something special.

I can’t tell for certain which one of these young mares will win tomorrow, however what l do know is that one will have a new life time mark much faster than what they have today.
