A stable’s faith was rewarded when 10-year-old trotter Rostevarren saluted at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday night, only his second career metropolitan victory.
A delighted trainer-driver Ross Graham, who gave a significant victory salute when his Band Of Chips gelding claimed the Aldebaran Park Trot, caught up with track presenter Rob Auber post-race, which was captured in Trots Media’s Winning Driver Interviews.
“He’s been a good horse to us all throughout his career,” Graham said. “As has been well documented he broke down as a late three-year-old and took a long time to come back.
“He has probably never gone as good as he did as a juvenile, I suppose there are a lot of horses in that category, but he has still been a pretty special horse to us.”
Having knuckled down with cover on the pegs, Rostevarren, at the luscious odds of $98.90, peeled out at the corner when a lovely gap opened on his outside and Graham drove him three-wide to a comfortable 1.4m win.
“He’s got a unique style that last 100 or so metres when he’s under pressure. His form coming into this race probably wasn’t quite as bad as it looked,” Graham said. “On his last week performance his sectionals over the last mile were the best in the race. He’s actually been going quite good but hasn’t been having much luck.”
