The Mildura trots club is putting its best hoof forward this Sunday showcasing the Victorian pony trots and encouraging local families to become involved at its twilight race meeting.
“The pony trots can provide a great stepping stone into a future career in the trots and is a fun way to compete and enjoy your pony,” Pony Trots manager Andrea Parkes said.
Pony trots participant William Talent and his mum Kimberly will be on hand at the Mildura meet with their pony, Speedy Special, to answer all questions.
Entry to the meeting is free.
Mildura is the home of talented young pony trots driver Lachlan Prothero, who represented Victoria in the Lizzie of Rosslands Junior Driver Series in New Zealand two years ago where he finished second overall.
Meanwhile, two local retired pacers will represent the HRV HERO (Harness Education and Re-homing Opportunities) program in Casino Evil and White Sands.
“HERO works directly with the industry, its breeders, owners and drivers. The program’s focus is the facilitation of opportunities for standardbreds to transition from training to appropriate long-term retirement homes, primarily as ridden or pleasure harness horses,’ HERO manager Tanya McDermott said.
Being school holidays and coinciding with the Mildura Country Music Festival, which begins Friday, a big crowd is expected to be trackside on Sunday.
“That event brings thousands to our city for the 10 days of the festival and hopefully it will help bring many to the trots,” Mildura club secretary/manager Mark Kemp said.
